Proper Upkeep for Steel Building to Prolong Its Service Life

Steel buildings are generally durable and can resist a number of elements, such as mold and mildew growth, rotting, cracking and warping. However, they can still be subjected to a number of ills especially if they are not properly cared for. Thus, if you own a steel building, it is vital that you attend to its maintenance needs to keep it in shape.

Fortunately, looking after your steel building is something that can be easily done. With a few investment of time, money and effort, you can prolong the service life of your steel structure and make it better in withstanding daily wear and tear. Here are some of the things that you need to do.

Snow and ice removal

Snow and ice can be damaging to steel. If they are allowed to sit on the surface for a very long time, they can be a catalyst for corrosion to which steel is highly susceptible to. And, if left to accumulate beyond the structure's snow load capacity, they can put the integrity of the building at risk. Hence, do not let snow or ice accumulate on the roof of your steel building during winter. Pull off snow or ice from the ground using a long-handled roof rake. If you need to climb onto the roof, always observe safety practices to avoid injuries or, better yet, employ the help of a professional to safely remove the snow and ice buildup.

Gutters and downspouts

These components function as the drainage system of your steel building that direct water away from the roof and wall panels, thereby keeping it safe against moisture. To ensure they are doing their job right, free them of leaves, twigs and other debris that might be obstructing the flow of water. Use gutter scoop to remove buildup and hose them down to make sure they are draining as they should. If you allow these things to collect in your gutters and downspouts, they can cause corrosion that can damage your steel building.

Door and windows

Your steel building's doors and windows play a huge role in keeping the space ventilated. Thus, you need to ensure they are in good working condition. Always keep them clean using the right cleaners and they are properly sealed to prevent air leaks. It will also be best to lubricate their hardware if your find that they are difficult to operate. For the windows, check the weatherstripping and replace it if it is already torn or deteriorated.

Other surfaces

Dirt, dust and other debris will always find their way onto the surfaces of your steel building, especially on the wall panels and roof. These things could also retain moisture and salt from air which, if left unattended, can cause the galvanized coating of the building to deteriorate. Before that happens, wash the entire building with water and the right type of cleaner. Use a soft bristle brush to scrub away dirt especially on hard to reach areas such as side panels and under the eaves. It is recommended that you do this at least twice a year to prevent your building from corroding.
