Is There a Way to Improve the Aesthetic of a Steel Building?

A steel building does not have to look plain or downright ugly. There are many things you can do to give your steel structure a fresh face and make it as aesthetically pleasing as possible.

Although steel buildings are noted for their cost-efficiency, durability and functionality, some people are still skeptical to invest in them for one reason: appearance. There is a widely held misconception that steel buildings are generally unattractive. The truth, though, is that with improvements in technology and manufacturing, a lot of the high quality steel structures available today are a far cry from the plain metal boxes that were once used in farms. Modern steel buildings are more attractive and blend well into their surroundings. In fact, some can even be mistaken as structures made from wood or natural stones.

Of course, there are still steel buildings out there that do not look quite as good as the ones that are well furnished. And if you happen to be stuck with one, take heart. There are many things you can do to improve its appearance and make it look more aesthetically pleasing. Below are a few ideas how you can do just that.

Add a cupola

The roof of your steel building offers you a lot of opportunities for enhancement. One good way to dress it up is to add a cupola–a small, usually dome-like structure that crowns the roof. A cupola is a small building in its own right. More than just functioning as an architectural feature on the roof,  it also helps in admitting light and air to the interior of the building. You can have cupolas with louvers, windows or weather vanes installed on your structure's roof.

Give it a nice lick of paint

If the original color of your steel building is starting fade or chip, then try giving it new coats of paint. This enhancement will not only flip the look of your structure, but will also provide a layer of protection against dust buildup, moist and rust. Do not limit your choice of paint color with the usual black, gray or dark blue. Instead, try using two coordinating colors and apply them as you would do to your home. This will make it easier for your steel building to seamlessly fit in a suburban setting.

Touch up your steel building with new features

Finishing your steel buildings with new features is another solution you can try to improve its look. You can forgo the outdated windows and doors and outfit the unit with sliding or roll up options. Canopies, eaves, mansards or facades are also excellent additions you can integrate into your steel structure.

Of course, these new features are not just for cosmetic value. They can also enhance the function and efficiency of your steel structure. For instance, new windows and doors can can help regulate the temperature inside the building and also let natural light in, thereby reducing the amount of energy used during the day. Canopies and other overhangs, on the other hand, will provide shelter to door entrances, walkways and other areas around your steel building that require open access.

Invest on exterior finish or siding

To give your steel building a major facelift, consider adding an exterior finish to it. There are many options available for exterior finishes that can now be used on steel buildings. These include stucco, engineered wood, natural stone and fiber-cement just to name a few. Aside from giving your steel structure a polished look by camouflaging unsightly marks and spots on the exterior, the addition of a siding can also protect the structure from the damaging effects of weather and other outdoor elements. Before picking a siding material, however, be sure to do your homework so that you will be able to find a product that suits your needs as well as your budget.
